MRS. DOWNS' GOVERNMENT COURSE OUTLINE

  Introduction

American Government examines the structure, organization, and the function of our political system. Topics to be addressed include the foundations of the U.S. government, the U.S. Constitution, and the three major branches of government. Students will also study the details of the political system at the national, state, and local levels. Elections, and election related issues will be discussed. Comparisons will be made between the American government and other political systems. Foreign relations will be discussed.

  Objectives

Using a variety of resources and practice, students will be able to:

•  explain the characteristics of various forms of government.
•  determine the influence of major historical documents and ideals on the formation of the United States government.
•  explain the principles of American Constitutional government and how they are realized in its structures and functions.
•  describe the state, local, and tribal governments with emphasis on their structures, functions, and powers.
•  describe the means of influencing and participating in a republic.
•  identify the meaning of basic constitutional rights guaranteed to citizens.

  Grading Categorization

Assignments: 50% of your grade will be based upon assignments and projects.
Tests and quizzes: 50% of your grade is comprised of tests and quizzes.

D 70 - 76
F 69 or below
